It Doesn't have to be a Chore

Organizing your kids' chores does not have to be one. Don't you just love Pinterest? That's where I first spotted these cute little magnets.

So...I decided, "I could make those!"
So I went to my local craft store and got these...(Please excuse the "I'm too lazy to get out my real camera") pictures.

I asked my kids to jot down some chores that they thought were appropriate. They will be more likely to do them because they had a hand in the process(so I hope)!

Then I typed them up and printed them on cute paper.

Then I attached the magnet dots to the back of each one. Now each child can choose how much he/she wants to earn. My kids are 12 and 8. Before this post was complete, my usually reluctant 8 year old was unloading the dishwasher!

Lastly, I will attach different colored ribbon to the rim of each jar, so the kiddos can begin working away the chores!!!

I found a recipe and it saved me time this evening! There's nothing like the feeling of coming home from a long day, NOT having to cook dinner, and still giving your family a home-cooked meal.

Crock Pot Chicken Taco Chili

Ingredients:

1 onion, chopped
1 16-oz can black beans
1 16-oz can kidney beans
1 8-oz can tomato sauce
10 oz package frozen corn kernels
2 14.5-oz cans diced tomatoes w/chilies
1 packet taco seasoning
1 tbsp cumin
1 tbsp chili powder
24 oz (3-4) boneless skinless chicken breasts
chili peppers, chopped (optional)
1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro

Directions:

Combine beans, onion, chili peppers, corn, tomato sauce, cumin, chili powder and taco seasoning in a slow cooker. Place chicken on top and cover. Cook on low for 10 hours or on high for 6 hours. Half hour before serving, remove chicken and shred. Return chicken to slow cooker and stir in. Top with fresh cilantro.

Try it. I dare you! I served it over tortilla chips. Stay organized my friends!

Christmas Past

I usually like to leave my Christmas decorations on display until after the New Year. I happen to be a New Year baby. Today I was in a mood for cleaning and organizing, so I while my boys were away, I put Christmas in boxes and bins. I happened to stop every now and then to browse on Pinterest. That's when I found THIS.

I had cards from Christmases past in a pretty red photo album. So imagine my delight when I found this cover for a little Christmas card book! It's from eighteen25.blogspot.com It was as easy as click, download, print.

Remember...
The easier things are packed away, the easier the decorating next year.
Label everything.
Wrap breakables carefully.

TIs the Season

I apologize fellow bloggers and followers. I have been somewhat out of touch with my blog. However, don't be mistaken. I have NOT been out of touch with organization. I'm back and I have a cute party idea for you!

It's the Christmas season, and you want to spend more time with friends and family. I love the days off from my regular job as a school teacher so I gladly say "yes" when the kids ask me if friends can come to play.

SO...we invited some friends over for decorating gingerbread houses!
I used this CUTE invitation that I printed for FREE from One Charming Party

I added Christmas candy stickers and placed them in red envelopes. My kids gave the invites an A+.

Check out these cute ideas:

Place decorating supplies in a muffin tin...or two.

This worked very well, since we had 2 different tables set up for the event. I raided the Dollar Tree for candy that was decor-worthy and small enough to fit in the muffin tins.

The day or two after Christmas, you can find the houses on clearance. (I know because I did last year.) I paid around $2.50 to $3.00 for each one. As you know, they are regularly around $10 each. I plan to do the same this year, so we can have a repeat of this year's party. That is if you do not beat me to them.

MENU:
We served Christmas cookies and milk or hot cocoa.
Of course, there was plenty of candy for nibbling.

FAVORS:
Each guest received a gingerbread man ornament. These came in a package of four at 50% off from my favorite place Hob Lob. :-)

Tell-Me Tuesdays: E-Happenings

Well today I learned a new term: E-hoarding. You may be a hoarder and not even know it. Are you hoarding emails? Are you holding on to useless emails for no reason? This could be you.
It is o.k.
Let's deal with it and move on with life. :-)

1. Sort your emails according to sender, or subject.
2. Browse them, and decide what can be DELETED. Go ahead, you can do it!
3. If you need important info from the emails, create folders that can be opened when needed. Some generic ones might be WORK, KIDS, BOOK CLUB...
De-clutttering your e-files are as easy as 1-2-3. The key is deciding what's important and what's not.

Don't get me wrong, this will take time. Just like removing clutter from a room, it will be worth the time in the long run! I can help organize your digital world!

It can be a hassle to keep your trash cans clean. When they are kept outdoors, they collect rain water, then someone has to dump it. Welcome to any NEW Plan-it O readers. I recently joined my local Chamber of Commerce and I am excited to meet other local business owners and meet new clients in the future!

Some things I love that will help you stay organized:

Mason jars are great for anything! I use them in my office for pens, markers, scissors, and various other craft supplies.

I've mentioned GOOGLE Calendar before. Definitely a necessity in any busy family.

Dry-erase boards are great for anyone-even your kids! I make my kids a to-do list for bed-time routine, morning routine, or whatever! School will out in 11 days so I will use the dry-erase boards for Summer routines, what to pack for camp, and fun messages!

Save space with a CD binder. I got rid of ALL the DVD cases in my house (take a deep breath and just DO IT!) and placed ALL DVDs and Wii games in a binder. I found mine at a local discount store. Now instead of shelves, drawers, and boxes of DVD's, we have one large binder on one shelf.

Last but not least, check out this wonderful give-away at Southern Hospitality. I've seen this fabulous machine and drooled over it. Oh, the things I could do with this! Imagine freshening up your organized room with a craft that you made on your NEW, FREE Silhouette machine!

A little late, I know.

Question of the day...How does she do it? Inquiring Moms want to know.

While it may seem that the well-put-together lady at the park with her triplets who's perfectly dressed, and actually brushed her teeth today, has it all figured out. I am positive that if you asked, she has some issue that you are not seeing. Maybe she has a pile of laundry that's been sitting in her recliner for a week. Just saying...
The truth is, nobody's perfect. And the great news is, we don't have to be. As wives, mothers, teachers, secretaries, and everything else we are to everyone-we feel like we must juggle it all with no room for error.

*Get a planner if you like the paper-pencil method, or use the calendar on your phone. Set reminders. It helps me feel a sense of accomplishment when I can cross items off the list. If I think of something at work that needs to get done later, I create an "event" and then get a reminder.
*I also found a wonderful APP for your IPHONE or IPAD you can check it out HERE. It will help with the day-to-day runnings of the business of your household. It is called Motivated Moms. The name alone makes you feel great!

Tell-Me Tuesday

Welcome to the first edition of Tell-Me Tuesday!
Each Tuesday I will choose 2-3 questions from my readers! Send your question in today and the answer might end up on next week's post!

Question 1: How do I keep my kids' school work organized? Which "memories" do I keep, and how do I let go?

Great question! Our children bring home so many important works of art, etc. It can get a bit overwhelming, unless you plan to add a room onto your house just to keep them all. I suggest you choose 3-5 writing samples for the year. The handwriting will change over the years, not to mention the content that they write. It's fun to look back on writings when they are older and giggle over them!
Choose which drawings are very cute and funny. If necessary, frame them. Bring seasonal drawings out at the appropriate times.

I use a filing system (file drawer) that consists of a folder with each child's name. This is where I keep the "keepers".

Another suggestion is to develop a system where you rotate the work through a couple of steps before letting go of them. First display the work on the refrigerator or on something similar to this:

Then after a few weeks, replace these items with new ones. Place the old items in the file drawer or "let go of them".

Question 2: Do you have any tips for planning a garage sale?

Be sure that items that aren't for sale are kept out of sight on the day of the sale!
Be sure everything is clearly labeled.
Have enough change on hand.
DON'T have the sale on a holiday weekend.
DO have the sale around a payday.
Have plastic grocery bags available for customers to put items (especially breakables) in.
If it is a hot day, have the kids set a lemonade stand or sell water bottles.
DON'T forget to check the pockets of all purses and clothing. You wouldn't want someone finding old receipts with your personal information. Who knows? You might even find some cash!
DO have an electric outlet nearby so they can tryout the toasters, blenders, etc.
ADVERTISE, ADVERTISE, ADVERTISE
Use your local newspaper, make signs, and tell everyone you know!

Be sure there aren't any requirements, such as permits, in you area.

This recipe will save you time! It was tested and approved by my family-they are my best critics sometimes!

Upside Down Pizza

Prep Time: 5 min. (Really? We'll see...)

Cook Time: 30 min.

2 lbs. breakfast sausage (I got the Italian kind)

1 jar Orti de Calabria Sauce (I don't know...some sauce that was BOGO free.)

I think any tomato-basil sauce will work.

1/4 cup flour

2 cups mozzarella cheese, shredded

1 refrigerated pizza crust (or crescent roll dough will do)

1/2 cup Parmesan cheese

4 tbsp. Extra Virgin Olive Oil

DIRECTIONS:
Brown sausage in a large skillet, and add sauce. Let simmer for 5 minutes, then add the flour to thicken the sauce. Pour meat mixture into a 9 X 13 pan. Top with mozzarella cheese. Unroll the pizza crust and cover the cheese for the top crust. Brush crust with oil and sprinkle with with Parmesan. Bake at 425 degrees for 25 minutes or until golden brown. Serve hot!

If the Shoe Fits

I am stuck in bed today. Maybe it's a good thing every now and then (not to be sick, but to be forced to be still). My body is aching. My head hurts. I had to get up, have a cup of coffee, and feel productive. Not much talking today. Just a little reading and blogging will do. I am trying to teach my children the value of a day off.

I wanted to share my latest favorite thing with you...

The problem was that no matter how many times I purged, rearranged, and organized, my entire shoe collection would fit on NONE of the above. Pairs of shoes would end up on the floor.

Recently, on a date night, we found this...

The wonderful thing, is that our date night included a trip to one of my FAVORITE places- The Container Store! I LOVE this man. He even helped me choose which one would be best for our closet!

All shoes fit comfortably on this new rack. It is slim, sturdy, and does not get in the way. Boots fit upright on the top row instead of on the closet floor. Yes, I'm in love.

OMG! Organize My (teenage) Girl

Recently I was asked to HELP with a teenager's room. I was up for the challenge. We said CU L8R clutter! There was no LOL at first, but by the end I think I made a BFF.

The key was letting her know I wasn't there to change her personality or to force her to get rid of anything that is important who she is. The entire room was emptied, and only what was keep-worthy was allowed to return. Even the closet got a make-over. (Sorry I don't have any pictures of the closet since my camera was misbehaving!)

Paper, Paper, Everywhere

One of the biggest questions I get from homeowners is about how to manage paper clutter-mail, school work, receipts, you name it. It all seems to pile up somewhere. There is usually a "hot zone". It may be one of your countertops, the kitchen table, the bar, or the island. It is o.k. to have something nice-looking to keep papers in-a small basket, a nice box, something that can stay in the public view-for a short time. At some point the zone has to be tackeled or deadlines will be missed, bills may go unpaid...you get the picture, right?

Tip #1: As you make the long journey from the mailbox to your front door, you can eliminate 50-75% of the paper pile-up if you sift while you walk. I immediately make three-four categories in my mind-keep, shred, read, file. Then, instead of tossing everything in the "hot zone", I only place what I have deemed worth keeping.

Tip #2: Buy a shredder. Anything that includes any type of personal information should go the shredder. Especially credit card offers, etc. Be aware that some of those kind companies have already started filling in the form for you! Better to be safe than sorry!

Tip #3: Choose a day of the week to clear the "hot zone". Do yourself a favor and don't hold on to papers for too long. The longer you let the papers pile up, the more time it will take to sift through them!

Tip #4 Create a filing system that is organized and manageable. This will save you a lot of headaches in the future when you are looking for important documents.

First Pantry of 2011

First, I would like to wish everyone prosperity, love, happiness, and organization in 2011!

Now let's get down to business! Yesterday, I organized the first pantry of the new year! We eliminated clutter, created space, and now these homeowners can see the floor again. This will create more storage space in the future. We donated, trashed, and of course, reorganized!

This pantry was home to a little bit of everything. There were several small appliances that hadn't been used in a long while, along with some food items that were out of date. This family would like a healthier 2011 so we also took out items that will hinder them from accomplishing that goal.

Cheers! Here's to a healthier, organized new year for this family!

*Here's a hint for your pantry: If you can't see it, you won't cook it.

Items need to be visible for the whole family. Items tend to get forgotten or become spoiled if they are hidden. Group like items together, so it's not like a treasure hunt when you open the door! Want to keep your family healthy? If you don't want them to eat it, don't buy it!

New Year, New Pantry

We took this pantry from drab TO fab just in time for 2011! The problem was too much food in too little space. This pantry was costing the homeowner time and money. Time was wasted looking for items, and money was wasted when "lost" items were purchased over again. Not enough space in your pantry?

No Problem...

What happened to all that food? It's there, and with room to spare! After getting rid of only a few items that were out of date, we repacked, and reorganized.

Now there's only one question: What's for dinner?

Please Save My Closet

This fully-stocked gift closet was in desperate need of a Plan-it Organization rescue. I was under a time crunch for this one, since the home owners were expecting guests in under two hours.

After we pulled everything out, I was afraid I had bitten off more than I could organize. But with some planning, I tackled the job, and finished in the nick of time.

Before: Over-stuffed, cluttered, and disorganized.

After: Cleaned, Purged, and Re-organized. Everything is now clearly labeled.

Adult gifts are separated from baby and child gifts.

Party supplies are contained in one area.

Gift-giving will be a cinch the next time this homeowner has a party to host or attend!

Boxes and tubs are clearly labeled.

I want to thank these homeowners for their generous hospitality and for trusting me with their space. Enjoy your new gift closet!

It's Beginning to Look A Lot Like Christmas

If you've braved the holiday crowds, then you already know that you're not the only one looking for that perfect gift at a great price. Here are some tips to keep you laughing all the way!

1. Make a list, or two. Perhaps you need to have a list for family and friends, and one for co-workers. Make you list(s) your way. Lists are made to keep you organized.

2. Downsize. Larger families may want to consider drawing names for gift exchange. After all, do we really need all that STUFF? Make it fun by making two separate drawings for adults and kids. This will save everyone time and money!

3. Give yourself a budget. Who wants to be paying for Christmas in March? Christmas should be a joyous time, not one that leaves you and your bank account feeling drained.

4. Leave a legacy. Remember that whether you realize or not, you are teaching your children what Christmas and the holidays are all about. Choose a family who is less fortunate to give to this season. Let your children help you choose the gifts and teach them about giving, not just receiving.

5. Deck the halls. When preparing your home for holiday entertaining, rememebr that it is truly about your guests. Spend less time worrying about whether your home looks picture perfect. In the end, your guests will remember the great time they had, and not your themed holiday towels.

6. Make room for Christmas. Take some times to eliminate some clutter any time you can. When you leave a room, don't forget to grab at least one thing that doesn't belong.

7. Give Christmas away. Find a donation center in your area as you discover coats that don't fit, or toys that are no longer needed.

This post is brought to you by the letter H. H is for homework. Keep everyone organized by teaching your children to prioritize their homework. Maybe they aren't required to have things turned in the very next day, so teach them to choose what they will complete first, second, etc.

*Look at the family calendar. If your family has extra curricular activities, teach your children the work, then play attitude. Getting your work done early, means more time to play outside, or watch t.v.

*Choose a place for things to get signed, or create in/out boxes for to keep your children (and you) organized!
*Do your homework! Get to know your child's teacher and what he/she expects and when. This will help them (and you) in the long run.

How Sweet! A First Birthday Idea

Paper or Plastic?

Recycling is a "buzz" word, to say the least. My family recently moved from a "let's recycle" town to a "we don't recycle here" town. Having already learned the habit of recycling, my family still does. However, where should we put it all? That is the question.

At my home, water bottles and paper tends to gather and pile up on the kitchen counter. Then the recycle fairy (that's me) takes them to the garage where they sit in bags or boxes until the are taken to a "final resting place" to actually get recycled.

But why not got to your local Dollar Tree and get two-three small bins or even these

and place them in your pantry or laundry room and designate them as the place to put your plastic, paper, and glass. Then find out if a school in your area has a Paper Retriever.
One of my favorite places, Target, has bins in the front of the store. Choose a day to drop off your recycling, and make it part of your routine.

Camp Lottafun

The Camp-Out: Another Great Birthday!

For my son's 9th birthday, we invited everyone to hike on over to Camp Lottafun. With an October birthday (actually it's exactly one week from Halloween), the challenge for me is to find a theme that is free of witches and goblins. My son likes this theme so much, he has chosen it twice!

Campsite: We borrowed a real tent from an avid camping family at church. And borrowed a fire-pit to serve as the campfire. I decorated with camp signs, and not much else. It was a fairly chilly night. One never knows the surprises that Texas weather will bring. We've experienced October parties with warm weather. So we were happy that a "cold front" came in that day! It was perfect camping weather.

Food: *Taco Soup keeping warm in the Slow cooker outside.

Easy Taco Soup:

Ingredients:

2 pounds ground beef (or turkey!)
1 envelope taco seasoning
1-1/2 cups water
1 can (16 ounces) mild chili beans, undrained
1 can (15-1/4 ounces) whole kernel corn, drained
1 can (15 ounces) pinto beans, rinsed and drained
1 can (14-1/2 ounces) stewed tomatoes
1 can (10 ounces) diced tomato with green chilies
1 can (4 ounces) chopped green chilies, optional
1 envelope ranch salad dressing mix

Directions

In a Dutch oven or large kettle, cook beef over medium heat until no longer pink; drain. Add taco seasoning and mix well. Stir in remaining ingredients. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat; simmer, uncovered, for 15 minutes or until heated through, stirring occasionally. Yield: 6-8 servings (about 2 quarts). Place in a crock-pot to keep warm. I like to serve it over tortilla chips or corn chips, and top with shredded cheese and/or sour cream.

*The kids roasted hot dogs on the fire.

*And of course no camp-out would be complete without s'mores! YUM!

The Cake: Need I say more?

Treats and Eats: *Everyone assembled their own trail mix to take home.

*Everyone received a whistle, and a flashlight.

*The birthday boy led the guests on a flashlight walk (with adult supervision of course!)

Dancin' Queen

The invites:

I happened to have this great photo of my daughter from a fabulous photographer so I added a caption and printed the invite on the back. I've used Vista print for invitations the past couple of years, and have been very pleased.

The audience: The guests can range in age from 4-14. Everyone had a great time at our party, even the parents! I invited some of my friends' older daughters (I'll introduce them in a later post) to help with the crafts and games!

The Fun:

As each guest arrives, take a picture of them with the birthday girl in front of your fabulous, already-prepared backdrop. (see below)
Play Just Dance! on the Wii. (Everyone should try this!)
Kareoke machine
A picture perfect frame (I scored some foam embellishments on clearance for $3.00 at WM. Yay me!)
Play freeze dance.

Setting the stage:

*I prepared a backdrop in the entrance to a hallway in our house. I draped black fabric (which I already had on hand) and placed hot pink tulle and sheer material (which I also found in the fabric remnants at WM) in front of that. Yay me again!)

The pictures looked like this:

Then, your guests have a picture with the birthday girl to take home in the frame that he/she decorated! Yes folks, keepsake and craft in one!

*I used things we already had around the house, and decorating was a cinch. We had a few guitars (including the guitar hero ones.) I used a pink vinyl tablecloth on the main table, and a black one on the craft table.

Food:
Food should be kept to a minimum. Your guests are way too busy to sit down! Chips, dips, and finger foods will suffice.

The cake:
I got the idea for the cake from Family Fun. And I must say, my cake lady made us happy!

Treats:

*Have I mentioned I am not a huge fans of "goody bags"? Well I'm not. I would much rather give away something that doesn't end up in the "garage sale" pile in a couple months. Don't get me wrong, my own children LOVE goody bags!

*With that said, I decided for this party, each guest should have a CD of all of the birthday girl's favorite music! So my guests walked away with a picture, frame, sunglasses from the photo shoot, and a CD!

This party was no more than $175 including her present!

Mr. Potato Head: Another 1st Birthday

I LOVE unique themes. I heard this idea a while back for a first birthday party and thought it was prefect! Throw a party with the Potato Head family!

The Invites: Invite everyone to come "dress" their spuds!

The Decorations: Borrow or buy potato heads and pieces, and place them sparsely on the tables. They'll make great conversation pieces (no pun intended), as well as provide entertainment for your guests. Use burlap potato sacks as part of the decor, and use lots of color.

The Food: Serve baked potatoes with all the fixings.

The Cake: How about cupcakes with a body part, stuck in top of each one! How cute!

Games: If you have older children, play hot potato! Have contests for the best looking Potato Head!

The big ONE!

Your infant-turned toddler, is one, and you have now idea what to do. Does your little one have a favorite toy, or stuffed pal that can act as an inspiration? If not, maybe these ideas will help!

NUMERO UNO: The First Birthday

The invite: Make your own invitations by gluing them to the back of a card. Talk about invites on a budget!

The attendees: Keep it small. Your little one, (and you) will be overwhelmed if there are too many guests. If your family is large, limit it to just family.

Timing is Everything: Plan it around nap time, so the birthday boy (or girl) will be in his/her best present-opening mood!

Food: Serve Tex-Mex, chips and salsa, and margaritas. Sopapillas would be the icing on the cake!

Decorations: Make it colorful! Go with the traditional Mexican colors, or the primary colors of the invites.

The Cake: Bright colored cupcakes, or a cake made to look like an Uno card.

I would love to tell you that I've been so busy organizing, that I haven't had a chance to post party planning tips. That is not the case! I have super busy with my ~~real~~ job. I took on a BIG project for the summer, and a tutoring job.

Any way, I'm back!

So let me start by saying that after years of birthdays, parties, and other events, I've learned a lot about planning. At the end of the day (or night) it's about getting people together for a common cause to have a good time. My ideas come from my own children't parties, friend's parties, friends of friend's parties, or party themes that pop in my head in the wee hours of the morning when I can't sleep.

I would like to thank all of my dear friends who have come to me for ideas and acted as a springboard for the themes in my head!

Getting There...

Well, it's been too long since I promised party planning tips that won't break the bank. I have many, many ideas in my head and I haven't had the time to sit down and put them in writing. I will start by giving some "rules I live by" when I throw a party for my own children, and will add pictures of what I've done for their previous birthdays. I will add some great ideas that I've gotten while helping friends plan their own shindigs, or ideas that I've seen or heard of elsewhere.

Below are the notes from a mini session I did at the church Ladies' Retreat. What a wonderful weekend with wonderful ladies!

Organizing yourself:

It’s about time!

Feel like you don’t have time? Where is the time going? List the things in your life that take up the majority of your time, and ask yourself if those things are helping you reach your goals. If they are not, replace those activities with ones that will accomplish the things that are important to you.
Just say no! Saying no is one of the most difficult things for us to do. We worry what people will think if we say no. It is in our nature to want to please everyone. You cannot please everyone and you never will, so just learn to say no, and save yourself some stress later. What will you say no to this week? I dare you.

Make time for YOU. If you do not spend time on YOU, you will become frustrated with others when you have had no time to yourself. Make yourself a promise that this week you will have a quiet time, take the time to exercise (you will feel better I promise), or just sit and read (and I don’t mean face book)!

Time: Handle with Care. Your time is valuable so spend it wisely. You’ve heard the expression time is money. Things that save you time, usually cost more. Will you buy prepared carrots, or will you wash, cut, and bag them yourself? Make decisions in your home that will save you time, but are financially savvy.

Be prepared. Remember the old Girl Scout motto? Planning ahead is a key component to saving you time. How many trips to the drive-thru could be avoided, if we take the time to plan ahead for dinner? Create a gift stash; gift closet, gift bin and this will save you a trip to the store when a birthday invitation comes in the mail.

Organize your home:

Put your home on a diet.

Think of clutter as unwanted fat. It didn’t get there overnight, nor is it going to go away overnight.

When it comes to clutter: Imperfection is not a problem, unhappiness is.

Where do I start? Start small. Tackle clutter one space at a time. Don’t expect everyone in the house to be excited about your new love for organization.

Clarify your priorities so that you can make the right choices about getting rid of stuff.

For everything you bring into your space, you should be able to get rid of at least 2 things. To make it simple, let’s apply this to your closet: For every new item you bring in the closet, get rid of 2 articles of clothing you haven’t worn in months, or just don’t fit anymore. Don’t hold on to clothes you hope to fit into one day, and don’t hold on to clothes that are too big.

Clutter Principles by Peter Walsh:
Figure out what the purpose of a room is. If there’s something in there, that doesn’t serve that purpose, get rid of it.

If you don’t love it, use it, wear it, or have room for it, get rid of it. It’s clutter.

If you don’t make this lifestyle a habit, the stuff will creep back into your home.

We love stuff. So naturally we teach our children that they, too, need stuff to be happy. Let’s teach them at an early age that life is not about stuff.

Clutter VS. Food
It’s all related.

The math of weight is the same as that of clutter: You can only have as many books as you have room on your shelves; if you eat more calories than your body needs, they will be stored as fat.

The pantry: A great place to start.
Take everything out. Clean the shelves. Sweep the floor.

When you begin putting things away, only fill it with foods that have a purpose. Ever see something in your pantry and think, “Why did I buy this?” “Was I planning on cooking this?” Planning is the key to getting the kitchen under control.

Think of your kitchen in terms of zones:

Prep area – cutting board, knives, etc.
Cooking center – Pots, pans, spices, and utensils.
Eating area – Flatware, glasses, and napkins.
Cleanup area – Drying rack, dishwashing liquid, etc.

QUICK PURGE

Start at one end…clear out whatever you don’t like or use. Get rid of stuff that has nothing to do with your purpose in that room--car parts, musical instruments, toys, you get the idea.

All in the Family

Organization is a family affair. Want to save yourself some time and teach your kids at the same time? A child as young as 3-4 years old can help. When my children were too young to reach things in the kitchen, I took the silverware out (minus the sharp knives), removed the silverware holder, and let him/her put forks, spoons, etc. away. Sh-sh-sh...don't tell them they are learning classifying and sorting.

Your children can also sort laundry. That will save you few minutes. You just taught them about colors, and about light/dark. They can also fold things as small as face/hand towels.

Keep in mind that when you enlist amateurs things will not be perfect. Be patient. If you chastise, criticize, or insist on perfection no one (including your husband) will want to help you.

Keep it simple at first. Children live what they learn so start young and make it a way of life. If you decide to incorporate a payment system, be consistent. Then when you go to the store people can spend money they have earned, and they will learn it's a little harder to let go of that hard earned money.

It's LOVE month...
What are you in love with? Are you emotionally attached to your clutter?

Be careful to not get emotionally attached to things. Ask yourself, "Why am I holding on to this?"
If you have to think too hard to answer that, you should get rid of it.

It's ok to say "NO"
No thank you, that is.
Don't feel that you have to accept every item from someone wanting to get rid of something. I'm not telling you to turn down a bed if you are sleeping on the floor, but don't inherit someone else's clutter. Politely say no thank you. When someone says, we really don't have room for _______(fill in the blank) anymore. Would you like it? Take the hint: they don't have room for it, and neither do you.

Is your home a LOVE nest?
Create a peaceful, organized place for you/your family to come home to. After all, it is where the heart is. What's getting in the way of organization in your home or office? Get rid of the "stuff" that weighs you down.

Homework helps...

Write your child's spelling words on the bathroom mirror with a dry-erase marker
Create a file of quick and easy recipes, and rotate them over a series of weeks, months so you don't have to wonder "What's for dinner?"
Lay the kids' clothes out the night before. For picky fashionistas, give them a few choices. Make it clear that this decision cannot be changed in the morning. After all, the reason you chose this last night was to avoid the morning wardrobe brawl.
Create a snack basket, or container in the pantry and/or refridgerator so when anyone (kids) want a snack, they know exactly where to go. Then there will be no question about what is appropriate because snack choices will have been established.
Pack as much of the lunch that you can the night before.
Involve the kids. Let them go to the snack spot(s) and help pack their own lunch (to be checked out by you later, of course!)
As soon as everyone walks in the door, teach them the habit of placing everything in a designated area that needs to be signed, returned, read, or looked at. Perhaps there could be an in/out box for school, work.
Make homework a pleasant time so that everything goes smoothly. Designate a "homework spot". Ours is the dining room table or sometimes the office desk.

Living in you car?

Feel like you "live" in your car? Just don't make it look that way!

Keep a cute tote or bag to collect everything (toys, books, crayons, mail) that doesn't belong. When it gets full, bring it in the house and put everything away. Encourage kids not to leave electronics in the car!
Remind everyone to take things with them as they exit the vehicle.
Keep a small plastic bag on hand to collect trash.
When you stop at a gas station discard trash. This is a great habit to have. Very convenient that there is a trash can right next to the gas pump (smile).
If necessary, load the vehicle the night before with the appropriate equipment needed for tomorrow's activities, ie. dance shoes, baseball bag, that casserole dish of Grandma's.
Plan your trips before you leave the driveway. This will keep you from going in circles.
Is there a recycling bin, or charity drop-off location in your path? Gather any paper, plastic, clothes, etc. and clear some clutter whenever you get the chance!

QUICK--grab one of these that you have laying around the house...

Get some dividers, tabs, or something you print from your computer.

Find some pretty paper you also have laying around somewhere...

And you can make this homemade cookbook complete with sections that your "real" cookbooks have...Now those recipes have a "home" instead of being shoved in a drawer!

How's it Going?

Day 3 of my official resolution start date...
To stop making excuses and make it to the gym! It's going well so far...I've been to the gym twice this week, and am giving myself the night off!

How's your resolution list going? Are you able to spend more time with friends or family? It's all up to you! MAKE time. Do you feel like you need to be more organized to be able to stick to this resolution? Need help figuring out how to organize your time? It may involve saying the the N-word..as in...NO! Remember: Imperfection is not a problem-unhappiness is! If you are unhappy when you get home and feel like you are running in circles, don't let the month go by without changing! I went through a great study a couple of years ago that I need to re-visit...Making Room for LIFE. Did you know your life can be full of clutter just like your home?

We all have that friend-you know the one, or two, or three... Each time you see each other, it's a reunion and as you walk away, you say, "We need to get together!" This is your year...get your house in order, and plan a friend reunion. This doesn't have to cost a lot of money. Just time- a commodity more precious than gold. Need some theme ideas? I LOVE a good theme that is centered around food, or common interests! How about a grown-up tea party?

Learning how to manage your time can be one of the most effective changes you make this year.

Kids Kut Klutter!

The cast of this short production is my friend's cutie pies and their playroom.

ACT1: Taking out the clutter.
This playroom was a little messy, so Mom asked me to come help the kids streamline the clutter with help from her kids. The fun part: Mom and Dad were leaving...so...PARTY!!!
Just kidding around (no pun intended)...first we took everything out of this beautiful cabinet, placing items that are played with more often at the bottom. Baby items were moved to the top, since little sister wouldn't be the one getting them anyway.

ACT 2: A little help from BIG sis.

She swept away any evidence of glitter, paper, etc. Remember if you want your kids to be involved in keeping your home organized it's NOT going to be perfect. Accept it and move on. The object is to get them to help you! Need ideas on how to keep them interested in their chores? I can help with that, too!

ACT 3: Where do we put this stuff?
Mom wanted the puzzles out of the cabinets. So we arranged them on this great bookshelf that has the perfect cubbies. Games would go in the cabinet in place of the puzzles and loose pieces strewn on the bottom shelf.

ACT 4: Organizing--everything from coloring books to the play kitchen had to be organized. I can't take credit for the labeling this time, that system was already in place before I got there. Way to GO!

ACT 5: Let's talk.
A little "sit-down" between the kids and me about the R-word. RESPONSIBILITY. It doesn't matter who got it out, this place belongs to everyone, so everyone is responsible for keeping it organized!

FINALE: The finished product. Don't you wanna be invited over for a playdate?

P.S. We ended up with 2 bags of trash! WAY to GO kids!

Twas the Night Before Christmas...

Twas 3 days before Christmas, and all through this house...

not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse.

The clutter was stacked on table and floor.

There wasn't any room for Christmas decor.

More rapid than eagles, the emails they came.

Saying, "Please, can you help me?

Just don't tell anyone my name!"

And then in a twinkling, I arrived at their place.

We started to organize and make lots of space.

We talked quite a lot, but went straight to our work.

Within bags and boxes who knew what might lurk?

Out with the clutter and out with the trash.

On with the tree, and gifts in a flash!

And I merrily exclaimed

as I drove out of sight,

"Merry Christmas all,

and to all a good night!"

Last Minute Holiday Organizing Tips
Easy as 1-2-3
1. Make your list and check it twice.
List-making will keep you organized in the hustle and bustle of shopping...
Don't deviate from the list! This can waste big bucks and unnecessary time.
When traveling to more than one destination...be sure to place items on the list accordingly. Try to think of the most things you can get at one location, and minimize shopping time.

2. Deck the Halls.
As you walk through your house, pick up items that don't belong in a room. It only takes a minute. Make it a game. Tell your children, (husband, visiting relatives, the kid next door :-O ) to see how many items they can grab that don't belong and put them away. Maybe there can be a prize for the winner. Before you know it, the main focal room of the house is cleaned up.

3. C'mon We're Going on a Sleigh Ride
Only spend time on what really matters to you and your family. You cannot (unless you're God) be in two places at one time, so don't try. Don't waste time on what's not important. What will matter most 10 years from now, is that you spent quality time with the ones you love.

The gift your family really wants this Christmas is YOU, so give the gift of time. Who wants their Eulogy to read "She always had the perfect Christmas tree". Or "Her kids were always dressed perfectly". I'd much rather it read "She always gave wholeheartedly" Or "What a wonderful friend".

Jingle Bell time is a swell time...
Organize your home so you can enjoy a stress-free holiday season. Unwrap the "surprises" waiting in your closet. Save time in the kitchen by getting to know exactly what's in the pantry. Organize that home office or workspace.

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas Clutter...
Cabinets and drawers are the best places hiding places for the things you've been looking for. As my grandma says, "Rome wasn't built in a day." Take it task, by task. Choose one pile of "things" and spend a solid 15 minutes sifting. To keep it simple, make three groups:

(1) keep--these are things you will actually use in the near future. Next, take the time to put these things away.
(2) toss--items that you can no longer use and no one can either. (Shred papers containing personal information) As far as the old saying goes, "One man's trash is..." Well, if you wouldn't let a dear friend reuse it, then toss it.
(3) give away (yard sale) Items that can be donated to a charity (check your local area for locations) or placed in your next yard sale.

After the 15 minutes is up, walk away. Do something else, so you don't feel overwhelmed. Then (this next step is vitally important) COME BACK later or the next day.

Once you have arrived at your happy place, the golden rule is: For each item you bring into the space, you should find something that can be removed.
